We had a missionary from Cambodia, JD Crowley, speak last week in chapel. His text was out of Acts 1:8, which is a familiar verse to many of us. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (ESV)
Most of us have heard this message preached as the pattern for ministry. JD, however, showed us a different perspective on this passage. It really bugged me at first because I’d never heard anything like what he said, so it made me question the validity of the message; but after thinking for awhile, I realized that this might actually be something that many of us have overlooked.
In hermeneutics you’ll learn that there are many applications to a passage but only one interpretation; and the interpretation is what the author is saying in the context of the surrounding passages and the time that he is writing. The pattern for ministry message that we’ve all heard is actually an application, and Crowley went beyond that to show us the interpretation which was really exciting, encouraging, and dare I say, inspiring.
